I just didn't find the second book as magical as the first。 The aspects of the first book weren't as prominent in this one。 Eva didn't spend any time in her novice training town。 She hardly saw her friends, until they were absolutely necessary。 Ember was in it quite a bit, but there was no change in his character。 I also had trouble with the pacing。 It was full of action and jumped from one terrible incident to the next without any breathing room。 I didn't feel as much hope with this one。 If the I just didn't find the second book as magical as the first。 The aspects of the first book weren't as prominent in this one。 Eva didn't spend any time in her novice training town。 She hardly saw her friends, until they were absolutely necessary。 Ember was in it quite a bit, but there was no change in his character。 I also had trouble with the pacing。 It was full of action and jumped from one terrible incident to the next without any breathing room。 I didn't feel as much hope with this one。 If there is another installment of the series, I'd like to see some change with Ember。 I'd love to be back in Auteri。 。。。more

Darker than book one, which was cool。 I appreciated the way this expanded Eva’s world, with a new pace and setting and challenge。 But this story lacked the same charm and whimsy that made the first one so special。 Like, Eva no longer had the same “pinch of magic” that made her unique…now she was just mediocre at magic。 There was altogether too much sneering also。

Eva's story pick up shortly after the first book ended。 The Cullings have become more frequent and more severe。 As a Novice, Eva joins the rest of the Council in protecting the realm。 Early in the book, she and her friends discover who is behind these events。 Sadly, when they present the evidence before the Queen and Council, the Grand Master involved casts a curse to strip Eva of her magic。 Her mom steps in front of her and takes the curse instead。 Once she is sure her mom will heal, Eva return Eva's story pick up shortly after the first book ended。 The Cullings have become more frequent and more severe。 As a Novice, Eva joins the rest of the Council in protecting the realm。 Early in the book, she and her friends discover who is behind these events。 Sadly, when they present the evidence before the Queen and Council, the Grand Master involved casts a curse to strip Eva of her magic。 Her mom steps in front of her and takes the curse instead。 Once she is sure her mom will heal, Eva returns to her role of protector and also as a seeker to gain knowledge on how to stop the magic stealing。 In the end, the Grand Master sacrifices himself to save his daughter and the realm begins to heal。 Even Conrad and Eva have become allies as well as rivals。 Abe could end the story here but should continue to show readers how Eva grows into her magic。The text will pull readers in and they will feel like they are flying, hiking, climbing, etc。 along with Eva, Charlotte, Davy and the rest。 。。。more

Eva is an awesome witch with awesome friends。 Too many people underestimate her。 She has great ideas and is very passionate about helping others。This story has lots of adventure and good lessons as well。It was interesting how it all ended。

EVA EVERGREEN AND THE CURSED WITCH is the sequel to the heartwarming middle grade fantasy novel: EVA EVERGREEN, SEMI-MAGICAL WITCH。 In this book we rejoin Eva, her best friends Charlotte & Davy, and loyal Flamefox Ember on an even greater quest to save the realm of Rivelle。 After Eva earns her status as Novice witch, she learns the true source of the devastating magical natural disasters called Cullings。 But in a quick turn of events, the rogue magic causing the phenomena are pinned on her mothe EVA EVERGREEN AND THE CURSED WITCH is the sequel to the heartwarming middle grade fantasy novel: EVA EVERGREEN, SEMI-MAGICAL WITCH。 In this book we rejoin Eva, her best friends Charlotte & Davy, and loyal Flamefox Ember on an even greater quest to save the realm of Rivelle。 After Eva earns her status as Novice witch, she learns the true source of the devastating magical natural disasters called Cullings。 But in a quick turn of events, the rogue magic causing the phenomena are pinned on her mother instead。 Can Eva find a way to stop the person at large, while also clearing her mother’s name?I loved this book, and enjoyed diving back into a story with these wonderful characters! Reading this after the first book was very rewarding because we can really see Eva come into her own。 Since she has gained her confidence as a witch, this book is more about the big adventure rather than Eva’s internal struggle as a semi magical witch。 As a result this story feels bigger and more like a real mission or quest than the Novice quest did。 And while there still is a secondary cast of characters in this book, I feel like the main focus is truly on Eva this time。This story has a lot of twists and turns, and I raced through it in one sitting。 I also appreciated the Japanese spin to the names of characters and the delicious food descriptions (which prompted me to have Japanese food for dinner yesterday!)。 Julie Abe’s writing is warm and whimsical, while also giving you unexpected plot twists and clever spell incantations。 Ultimately, this story (like the first) still focuses on love, friendship, and believing in yourself - and it warmed my heart reading it。 I want to give this series to every young reader, as I feel like it has so many positive and hopeful lessons baked into it。Great for readers of any age, especially for those looking for fantasy books from BIPOC authors!Thank you to the author and publisher for a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I loved this story。 Both my daughter (10) and I (42) did! I have to say, for me, it rates even above Harry Potter。 Julie's world building is rich and her characters are flawed and tough and loveable。 I love that its assumed you have read the first book, Eva Evergreen Semi- Magical Witch, and the author doesn't spend the first chapter rehashing the previous story line but jumps right in believing that we are already along for the ride。 I really hope there will be more stories in this amazing and I loved this story。 Both my daughter (10) and I (42) did! the author fooled me! i mean, i thought i had the ending figured out, but she totally surprised me。 :)a delightful young readers sequel-- a bit "darker" than eva evergreen #1, but still no where near the darkness of even harry potter one。。。 :)full of great quotes, inspirational sentiments, friendship, and working together to defeat the bad guy and uncover secrets even when no one believes you。。。 or in your powers。recommended for miyazaki fans (who maybe like a dose of gilmore girls, too) and you the author fooled me! i mean, i thought i had the ending figured out, but she totally surprised me。 :)a delightful young readers sequel-- a bit "darker" than eva evergreen #1, but still no where near the darkness of even harry potter one。。。 :)full of great quotes, inspirational sentiments, friendship, and working together to defeat the bad guy and uncover secrets even when no one believes you。。。 or in your powers。recommended for miyazaki fans (who maybe like a dose of gilmore girls, too) and young readers who might get too many nightmares from hogwarts (i would have!) 。。。more

Eva Evergreen and the Cursed Witch picks up right where the first book ended, with Eva discovering the truth behind the Culling and resolving to save her mother and the realm。 Compared to the first book, the plot here goes to some fairly dark places, such as how even familial love can become destructive。 However, even when things get dark, Eva remains as adorable as ever, and her determination to protect her friends and family is a delight to read。

Thankfully I already had Eva Evergreen and the Cursed Witch in my possession。 I immediately started reading it, and I could not put it down! I finished Eva Evergreen and the Cursed with in a few hours。 There was foreshadowing hidden in book 1 that was fully revealed in book 2, and the stakes went super high, super fast and kept climbing。 A witch close to Eva is cursed, and Eva must do everything she can to help that witch get her curse removed all while trying to prevent more Cullings, which have ramped up in intensity and frequency。 The pacing was expertly done, compelling me to read more and more even though I was exhausted and not feeling well。 Without giving any spoilers away, let me just say that the book ended really well with a few unfinished threads that leave the book open for a sequel, which I will preorder the moment I am able to。I cannot highly recommend Eva Evergreen and the Cursed Witch enough。 It is very worth going on the adventure with Eva Evergreen, Ember, and all of her friends! Please do yourself a favor and pick up this amazing tale。 Eva Evergreen is the first middle grade fantasy I have picked up this year, and I am so glad that I read it。 I plan on making my daughter read it because she will love it, and I will be sharing this tale with everyone I can。In summary, Eva Evergreen and the Cursed Witch is amazing and a must-read middle grade fantasy book。 。。。more

I also really liked the element of a complex antagonist; people aren't always clearly good or clearly bad, and this book does a nice job of incorporating this for younger readers。 I was left with mixed emotions regarding their fate and I still don't know what to think about it。 That all being said, the heart of this book is love。 I loved Eva's mother's love for her and her unending belief in her daughter。 I loved the inclusion of found family (literally and metaphorically), and the complications that can arise when the ones we love make questionable choices。 Lastly, I loved Eva's growth from the first book through this one。 Insecurity is some thing that we all deal with, but despite her fears and anxieties Eva carries on, pushes past those doubts, and brings forth impossible possibilities。 。。。more
